LETTERS, Page 7GOOD" CHOLESTEROL
I enjoyed reading your story on the "good" type of cholesterol
(MEDICINE, Dec. 12). I used to be able to take these articles with
a grain of salt, but since becoming an avid reader of the Medicine
section, I've cut down on salt. I've also given up sitting around
chewing the fat, and I no longer risk skin cancer by walking in the
sun with my head held high.
Dan Goldbeck

Those of us who are involved in alternative medicine are amused
that practices we have known about for years have achieved
legitimacy. Oat bran is not a new product, and it is only one of
many natural remedies that we have used for a long time.
Jan Pettit
Saluda, N.C.
I'm 52 and have a cholesterol count that is borderline
acceptable. By eating nothing but oat-bran breakfasts over the next
six months, I am hopeful that I can reduce it to below 200.
Thereafter, of course, I will continue to eat oat bran for the rest
of my life.

Your presentation of the relationship between lipid (fat)
metabolism and heart disease and of ways to obtain optimum
cholesterol levels was great. Certain foods should not be packed
in children's lunch boxes because of their high content of
saturated fat.
